Yes, social media can help. But it's not because you post a lot. ChatGPT and Google AI recommend businesses based on the public information they can find and verify. Your posts are one part of that. What matters is building a stronger, more credible online presence.
Posting more won't make ChatGPT pick you
Posting four times a week won't make ChatGPT recommend your business. There's no proven formula that connects how often you post to AI recommendations.
What matters is the quality of what people can find about you. Is it clear? Is it relevant? Can it be found at all?
How Google's AI decides what to show
Google says its AI features, like AI Overviews and AI Mode, are built on Google's core ranking systems. In plain words, the things that help you show up in regular Google search also help here.
Google also says you don't need special files, code, or markup to show up in its AI answers. There's no trick to add to your website.
Google does point to one tool you may already have. In its guide, Google says Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results." I wrote a full guide on how to get Google AI to recommend your business.
How ChatGPT finds businesses
ChatGPT can search the web when a question needs current information. OpenAI says it sometimes works with other search providers to do that. For local questions, it can use your general location to find nearby results. It can also show the sources it used.
So ChatGPT works from what's public on the web. If your business is hard to find online, it's hard for ChatGPT to find, too.
If you have a website, there's one technical thing worth checking. OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, called OAI-SearchBot, won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Ask whoever runs your website to make sure it isn't blocked. For more, I wrote a guide on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business.
Every post shows who you are
Every public post is another chance to show who you are, what you do, and why customers can trust you. Showing your own face helps with that, which I explain in why people buy from people.
Some of that is public information AI tools can find. But nobody outside those companies knows how much it counts. So write for the people who might hire you. They're the ones you're trying to reach.
What other people say counts, too
AI visibility isn't just about what you say about your business. It's also about what other people say about you.
Google says how well-known a business is depends partly on how many websites link to it and how many reviews it has. It also says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
Customer recommendations, local mentions, and online conversations all help build your reputation online. Social media is one of the places those conversations happen.
Be specific about what you do
Want AI to understand what your business does? Be specific.
Talk about your services by name. Talk about the problems you solve. Talk about the communities you serve.
Google says local results are based partly on relevance, which means how well a business matches what someone searched for. It also says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up. Clear, specific words give people and search tools a better picture of what you do.
Link your social profiles to your Google Business Profile
Google lets you add your social media links to your Google Business Profile. You can add one link each for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X, and YouTube.
Google says this option is only available in select regions right now, so you may not see it yet. Google also says posts about events, deals, or special offers from your linked social profiles may show on your Business Profile, in select regions and languages.
Here are the steps to add social media to your Google Business Profile.
What social media does for Google, and what it doesn't
Social media isn't a direct Google ranking factor. Your posts won't push your website up in Google on their own.
It can help in other ways. A good post can send people to your website. It can lead more people to search for your business by name. And the habit of posting can carry over to your Google Business Profile, so it stays active. I go deeper on this in do social media posts help your Google rankings.
What to do this week
- Fill out your Google Business Profile completely, and keep it up to date.
- Add your social media links to your profile, if you have the option.
- Make sure your business name, phone number, and services match everywhere they appear.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to the reviews you get.
- Post about your specific services, the problems you solve, and the people you serve. Here are 20 post ideas for service businesses to get you started.
Why I built Ada
Being specific, week after week, takes time. I built Hey Ada to help with that. Ada learns your business and writes posts about your real services, in your voice, for each platform you use.
