Not directly. Social media posting isn't a direct Google ranking factor. But it can support your overall online visibility. Think of social media as one piece of your marketing, not a shortcut to better rankings.
What Google says decides local results
For local searches, Google says results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. Google's page explains each one:
- Relevance is how well your Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.
- Distance is how far your business is from the person searching.
- Prominence is how well-known your business is.
Google says prominence is partly based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. It also says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up.
Social media isn't on that list. And Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Where social media fits
Social media still has a job to do. Google's own SEO Starter Guide lists social media promotion as one way to help people discover your website. It also calls word of mouth one of the most effective and lasting ways to do it.
Here's what I tell my clients. Social media keeps your business in front of potential customers. It reinforces what you do. And it gives people more chances to discover your brand.
How social media can help indirectly
Your posts won't push your website up in Google on their own. But they can help in other ways:
- A good post can send people to your website.
- It can lead more people to search for your business by name. Your Google Business Profile shows you how people found you, which I explain in what to measure on social media instead of likes.
- The habit of posting can carry over to your Google Business Profile, so it stays active.
Just remember that Facebook may limit how you share links. I wrote about what happened to me in how to share links on Facebook now.
Google Business Profile posts are different
Google Business Profile posts show on your profile in Google Search and Maps. Google says you can use them to share announcements, offers, updates, and event details directly with your customers.
Google's local ranking page doesn't mention posts. So I won't tell you they boost your ranking. But they put fresh, useful information in front of people who are already looking at your business.
Google also says posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set. I wrote a full guide on how to post on your Google Business Profile.
What helps your local ranking
If showing up on Google is your goal, start with the things Google names:
- Fill out your Google Business Profile completely, and keep it accurate. I wrote a guide on how to optimize your Google Business Profile.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to the reviews you get.
- Earn links from other websites, like local groups and businesses you work with.
- Make sure your profile clearly says what you do, so it matches what people search for.

What about AI search?
AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI work a little differently, but the same idea applies. Your social media is one part of your public presence, not a switch you can flip. I cover that in does social media help you get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.
