Let AI do the heavy lifting, then make the post sound like you. Use it to brainstorm and draft. Then edit until it sounds like something you'd actually say to a client.
How I use AI
I use AI to do the heavy lifting: brainstorming ideas, organizing my thoughts, and turning a rough idea into a finished post.
But I don't copy and paste whatever AI gives me. I want my posts to sound like something I'd actually say, not like a marketing textbook. AI should save you time, not replace your personality.
What I always change
The first thing I change is em dashes. AI loves them, and I remove them.
I also cut overly polished, generic phrases that sound impressive but don't say much. If I wouldn't say it to a client in real life, I don't want it in my posts.
Do you have to label AI posts?
For most business posts, no. The labeling rules focus on realistic AI video and audio.
- Meta says it may require an AI label on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads when content has photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was created or changed, including with AI. It says, "This requirement does not apply to images." Meta may still label images on its own if its systems detect AI.
- YouTube says creators must disclose AI-generated or altered content that seems realistic. Its list of things that don't need disclosure includes caption creation and idea generation.
So using AI to help write a caption isn't something you need to hide. Making it honest and useful is what counts.
Always check the facts
AI can sound sure of itself and still be wrong. Google's guidance for websites says it is "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing." That's good advice for social posts, too.
Check prices, dates, service names, and anything that sounds like a promise.
Simple ways to make AI drafts sound like you
- Read the post out loud. If you wouldn't say it that way, rewrite it.
- Add one real detail only you would know, like a question a customer asked this week. Your own story is what makes a post feel personal, which I talk about in why people buy from people.
- Cut words that sound like an ad.
- Use the words your customers use, not industry terms.
- Keep it short, and adjust it for each platform. I explain how in should you post the same thing on every platform.
AI should give you time back
The point of using AI is to make posting easier, so you can keep showing up. I write more about that in how often should a small business post on social media.
It also helps to know what AI tools look for when they recommend a business. I cover that in does social media help you get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.
I built Hey Ada to write posts in your voice, from what she learns about your real business. You review and share each post yourself.
