Post as often as you can keep up with, week after week. No platform gives small businesses one official number. The advice they do give is the same everywhere: post original content, and be consistent.
What the platforms actually say
- Instagram says "One of the most effective ways to grow is to post original content consistently."
- LinkedIn says "Companies that post weekly see a 2x lift in engagement with their content." That's LinkedIn's own figure.
- Facebook suggests posting Reels a few times a week to start. That advice is written for creators, not for small business Pages.
- Google Business Profile lets you schedule posts to repeat weekly or monthly. Google also says posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set.
You'll see other numbers online, like "post 3 to 5 times a week." Those come from marketing companies, not from the platforms.
I'm not consistent either
I'll be honest. I'm inconsistent about posting on social media, and I say that as someone who owns a digital marketing company.
I know social media has value. But when I'm deciding where to spend my limited time, it usually isn't my first priority. I'd rather spend that time on my website and Google Business Profile, getting free leads from Google, and improving my chances of being recommended by ChatGPT and other AI search tools. That work keeps bringing in customers long after it's done.
That doesn't mean social media doesn't matter. It means it shouldn't eat your whole week. If you want to know how social media connects to Google, I explain it in do social media posts help your Google rankings.
Burnout is real
I'm completely burned out on social media. I don't want to spend my days coming up with clever captions, making graphics, and worrying about whether I've posted enough. I want to run my businesses.
That's why I believe in making social media as simple and efficient as possible. You need a system that keeps you visible without eating your time.
Pick a pace you can keep
Consistency beats bursts. A steady pace you can keep for a year is worth more than a busy week followed by silence.
- Start with the one platform where your customers spend the most time.
- Add your Google Business Profile, since people find it while they're searching for a service.
- Choose a schedule you know you can keep, even in your busiest month.
- Add more only when it's easy.
Make it a system
Posting gets easier when you stop deciding everything from scratch every day.
- Plan a month of topics at once.
- Write several posts in one sitting.
- Schedule them ahead of time.
- Keep a running list of questions customers ask you. Each one is a post. For more, here are 20 post ideas for service businesses.
That's the kind of system I built Hey Ada to handle. Ada learns your business, plans a month of topics, and writes the posts for each platform you use. You can see how Hey Ada works on the home page.
What about AI search?
Posting more won't make ChatGPT recommend you. There's no proven formula connecting how often you post to AI recommendations. I explain that in does social media help you get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.
